Programme
Here’s a sneak peak at the programme. A full programme and map will be available to download onto your phone via QR code on the day.
OC1.05 - Science Talks
12pm - Sweating the Small Stuff: Life in Microscopy
Microscopes are one of the greatest tools science has ever known but there's more to microscopy (this just means using a microscope!) than just making small things look bigger. Come and find out about what else they can do!
1pm - Cartoon Physics
Crash! Bang! Pow! Ever thought about the physics behind your favourite cartoons? Come and find out how you could survive in a cartoon universe by using science and gadgets.
2pm - Nature’s Engineers
In this show you’ll be challenged to find the answer to three questions that each combine nature and engineering. With each question comes a demo to explain the answer. You’ll need to bring your shouting voice and stomping feet to make sure the answer picked matches your guess. There will be noise, there will be broken objects and a volunteer will be needed!
3pm - Explore Space with Telescopes
Come along and hear from real-life astronomers, who spend their days researching stars, planets, galaxies and more.
Drop-In Activities
-
A mini museum of engineering demonstrations. Come and explore with us and find out how things work, what makes things move, how we can control machinery and make new things. See what inventions the future might have in store for us and find out how Universities are trying to make the world a better place to live in.
Recommended Age: All
-
Come along to talk to real astronomers from the University of Warwick about all things space! We will be hosting night sky tours in our mobile planetarium accompanied with the chance to ask any burning space questions you might have. We will also be showcasing our Astro Table where you will have the chance to control the universe, interacting with objects such as stars, planets, black holes and much more!
Recommended Age: All
Please note: the planetarium is a ticketed event with shows every 30 minutes, please come by OC.02 to get your free tickets.
-
Students from Warwick Medical School will be leading a variety of activities for you to learn more about your body, how it works and how to look after it. Get stuck in with CPR, listen to the beat of your heart, conduct first aid on Teddy Bears and so much more!
Recommended Age: All
-
Fluids make up part of everyday life, but what do we know about them? Using some common fluids you would find in your kitchen and get stuck in with the basic properties of fluids. We’ll look at the resistance to flow of honey (known as its viscosity) and why bubbles and small raindrops are round (hint: it’s due to surface tension!) To understand the effect of these properties on fluid flow, we’ll use mathematical equations that describe the dominant physical principles.
Recommended Age: 7+
-
Cells in Virtual Reality – Come and use a virtual reality headset to get up close with real world cells. You’ll be able to move this cell around and learn more about the purpose of the software.
Please be aware, the VR headsets used in this activity have an age restriction, refer to signage on the day.
Recommended Age: 10+
Guess Who: Solving Crime with Computer Science – Have a go at our puzzles, narrow down the list of suspects and determine who is the guilty.
Recommended Age: 7+
-
Find out if cornflakes are magnetic, take part in a red cabbage experiment and delve into the wondrous world of the periodic table
Recommended Age: All
-
A quiet room with a few colouring pages and books. Head in here if you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the day.
Please be respectful of other room users while using this space.
-
Fuzzy Bacteria – Cells are in all living organisms, yet their minuscule size makes them challenging to observe with the naked eye. Come along and gain insights into the workings of genes and genetic engineering by simultaneously playing and constructing electric circuits within our "fuzzy bacteria."
Recommended Age: 7+
Dinosaur Digs - Learn about fossils, adaptation and the physiology of ancient dinosaurs. What do your bones have in common with a dinosaur? How can we tell if an ancient animal was predator or prey, without ever seeing it in real life? Do you have the skills to excavate our fossils and discover their secrets? Crack the secret code hidden in dinosaur names, and become a junior archaeologist!
Recommended Age: All
-
Light and Lasers - Light is everywhere. Come and learn about how scientists use light to measure the speed of the universe, the thickness of materials and even the colour of your honey.
Recommend Age: 7+
Please be aware, this activity includes lights that intermittently flash.
Echoes for Imaging – Come and use ultrasound echoes to investigate hidden features in a material and discover the image within. Learn how real-world engineers use this same technology to keep us safe, scanning everything from railway tracks, to planes and rollercoasters!
Recommended Age: 7+
Creating Constellations – Take a look at our planetary plushies, learn about the solar system with our Lego model and look down our telescopes. When you’re feeling inspired, unleash your creativity by drawing your own constellation and add them to our display.
Recommended Age: All
-
Come and see, touch and discuss a wide range of engineering demonstrations. Check out some of the things University of Warwick students have have built including a smart helmet, a biomimetic drone and a balancing robot. You will also see an engine part, an earthquake simulator and have an opportunity perform some experiments yourself!
Recommended Age: All
-
Design your own uterus or make your own macrophage!
Come and learn more about the uterus and the immune system, and make your own out of play dough!
Recommended Age: All
-
Get stuck in with polyhedra, origami, and other maths fun. Let’s colour, glue, and solve puzzles together. This will also be the starting point for an exciting puzzle trail.
