Science on the Hill is back!

After some time away, Science on the Hill returned to the beautiful Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building with exciting and inspiring research from the School of Life Sciences and Warwick Medical School! We were joined by friends old and new to hear about the surprising role of Metals in Biology. Dr Robert Dallmann introduced us all to the concept, explaining how despite what we might picture when we think of metals, they are actually essential for life. Dr Alevtina Mikhaylina then told us about the impressive role of bacteria in tackling climate change by removing carbon dioxide, but showed that none of this can happen without elements like iron. We then heard about metals in the brain from Professor Joanna Collingwood, learning about not only the role that they play in diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s but also how we can use their unique properties to take pictures of the brain. This gives us better images, and a better understanding of brain function. Lastly, we heard the fascinating story of metals in medicine from Edward Lant. From early use thousands of years ago to an essential function in chemotherapy, metals have an important role in treatments and therapies of all kinds of conditions, and we’re still learning even more ways to use them!

Science on the Hill will be returning to regular events, so make sure you are signed up to our latest news and events to hear about our the next exciting topic!
