Exploring transport equity with Sustrans

On Saturday 4th Feb, we were joined on campus by Sustrans and parkride / Midland Mencap to explore the disability cycle movement.

The day had a packed programme with a range of inspiring talks from disability change makers, campaigning for change in a focus group, imagining the city of the futurefuture in our art workshops, and experiencing assisted cycling with our led rides and cycle skills.

And if that wasn’t enough, Andrew from Broom Wagon Cyclery ran a FREE bike health check!

Kate Ball from Wheels for Wellbeing - Talk and discussion

Kate Ball, Campaigns and Policy officer for Wheels for Wellbeing gave a talk about  how infrastructure, social structures and attitudes currently disadvantage Disabled people. We looked at simple changes that are needed to enable everyone to make the journeys that they want and need to – and at how better active travel access for Disabled people will bring benefits to everyone.

Kate has worked for better active travel access and environmental improvements in Derby and Derbyshire for many years. She is one of the Cycling UK 100 Women in Cycling 2022 and her family are the Bikeability Family of the Year 2022.

Led Ride to Kenilworth Greenway

One of the highlights of the day was a community ride along the National Cycle Network looping between University campus and Kenilworth Greenway. New and experienced cyclists joined ride leaders from Sustrans and Parkride to experience assistive and adapted cycles.
