Warwick at Night: Stars, Planets & Biofluorescence

  • Cryfield Pavilion, University of Warwick Coventry, CV4 7AL United Kingdom (map)

This event is organised by the University of Warwick’s Sustainability Team and forms part of the University of Warwick’s 60th Anniversary celebrations!

A chance to explore the campus at night time, with opportunities to see nocturnal animals, investigate the UV spectrum, and visit the Observatory.

Join us for the first event in the Warwick at Night series where we explore the mystery of the night sky, get up close to nocturnal wildlife and venture out into the magical world of biofluorescence.

You will join Dan Bayliss, Director of the University's Marsh Observatory for a live experience operating the telescope, experience a planetarium show with Warwick's Astrophysics Group and then venture outside with the Energy & Sustainability Team to hunt for biofluorescence in nature with the help of UV torches!

By joining us, we hope you will gain a greater appreciation of the campus at night and enjoy an evening filled with fun.

Important Information

We recommend you park at Cryfield Village Car Park (P). There is a short walk along the pavement from the car park to the event starting point (S).

Programming

  • Peer into the depths of space and uncover the hidden wonders of our universe. The Observatory’s advanced 40 cm telescope and state-of-the-art digital imager offer students and researchers the opportunity to explore the cosmos, from planets and stars to distant galaxies and exoplanet transits.

  • Explore astronomy, space, and the night sky in the planetarium of the Warwick Astrophysics group. Inside a planetarium, images appear all around you, not just in front of you – it makes you feel completely immersed in the action!

  • Get a glimpse of the fluorescent world that is hidden from us with UV torches. Outside of the visible light spectrum, which is the part that the human eye can see, is a glowing ultraviolet wonderland normally only seen by creatures with specialised eyes.

This event is recommended for those aged 18+. Those aged 14+ are welcome with an accompanying adult.

Good to know:

  • Wear waterproof shoes to stay dry in case of dew or rain.

  • Dress in layers to stay comfortable because it can get chilly in the evening.

  • Bring a torch (we’ll provide the UV ones, but extra light is helpful!)

Banner which says warwick at night on the left and an image of the warwick uni W logo on the right with different people in it. Next to that it says 60 years and beyond.
