Festive Cooking in Greek and Roman Antiquity

This fun, celebratory feasting event is open to all. Led by Sally Grainger and Paul Grigsby - experts on Roman cooking are joined by students and staff from the Department of Classics and Ancient History from Warwick University as they invite everyone to cook up a storm on the theme of feasting, both ancient and modern, and join in with some food prep - Roman style!

Discover what a Greek symposium was like, get involved in mosaic making, pottery, artefact handling and some music-making with an ancient instruments. The event also includes a gallery of videos about ancient feasting made by Warwick academics and students with posters created by local schools. 

  • Do some Roman cooking and taste some Roman food as part of our Roman cookery masterclass with Sally Grainger and Christopher Grocock, Roman food historians, experimental archaeologists and experts in Roman food and drink*

  • View our giant Feast! inspired mosaic and make some small mosaics of your own

  • Learn about the ancient Greek symposium or drinking party

  • Get up close to some real ancient Greek and Roman artefacts including weapons, pots and coins

  • Hear some ancient music that would have accompanied ancient feasts

*The Roman cookery workshop will end at 3pm.

SCHOOL INVOLVEMENT:

Running alongside the event is a competition for schools – invited local schools are being asked to design posters and make short videos which will be visible throughout the day of the event in the Herbert Gallery. The posters and videos on the subject of ancient or modern feasts with a special interest in the diversity of feasts which occur in the cultural mix of modern day Coventry. All Primary Schools who take part will be entered into a prize draw to win a FREE virtual session with the Romans at Lunt Roman Fort worth £150, thanks to the generosity of the Herbert Gallery and Culture Coventry.

And thanks to the amazing continued support of the Classical Association, a prize of £100 will be awarded to the best contribution by a Secondary School, with a £75 prize for best contribution by an individual.
