Come and have a Slice of Science!

Back for its third year, Slice of Science took over The Oculus at the University of Warwick so that we could get hands-on with science! Organised by the Warwick University Widening Participation Team, students and staff members joined us to share their love of all things Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths - from dinosaurs to distant planets!

Over 350 people came to explore and experience talks and activities over the course of the day. In the theatre, we heard what goes on behind the scenes at Jaguar Land Rover, found out how astronomers study distant galaxies, learned how to freeze a human and followed the story of Madam Statistician and the Rash Covered King, as well as joining in a very noisy quiz about the human body!

Attendees could experience Virtual Reality, build their own washing machine out of Lego with Young Engineers, and Experience Engineering with the Warwick Manufacturing Group. For those interested in biology, we extracted DNA out of bananas, created our own glowing cells, tracked our eye movements, made DNA bracelets, learned about fossils and dug chocolate chips out of cookies!

We learned about worlds near and far, counting wildlife on biodiversity walks around campus and visiting the stars in the Warwick Planetarium, and challenged our minds with mathematical games and puzzles. We even got to catch smoke-filled bubbles and learned how to pour a gas with amazing dry ice demonstrations.

We’ll be back next year with more wonderful ways to have a little Slice of Science, and we can’t wait to share it with you!

Thank you to all the students and staff from the Warwick Manufacturing Group, Department of Physics, Faculty of Arts, Warwick Sustainability Champions, Warwick BioSoc, School of Life Sciences, Warwick Mathematics Institute, Warwick Medical School, Department of Chemistry and Department of Psychology who made this possible!
