The Big Read

  • Warwick Arts Centre Coventry, England, CV4 7AL United Kingdom (map)

In collaboration with Warwick Arts Centre and Kenilworth Books, Resonate presents the Big Read - a celebration of reading, writing and storytelling!

Join us in the Warwick Arts Centre Foyer for FREE workshops, read-alongs and interactive activities, brought to you by Resonate. Students and staff from the University of Warwick and our community partners will be sharing their love of stories all over the Warwick Arts Centre.

On the same day at 10.30am or 1.30pm, you can also get tickets for a showing of ‘Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book’, an exciting show of puppetry and enchanting songs inspired by the book of the same name written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. Recommended for children aged 3 to 8, tickets are £19 for adults and £17.50 for under-16s. Tickets for this show must be booked separately and are not included in the free activity.

Tickets for this ‘Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book’ can be booked here.

This day is recommended for ages 2 to 11 but all are welcome. Costumes are encouraged - pull out your World Book Day outfits for one more day!

Programme

In the Creative Learning Suite

11.45am-12.30pm: Multi-lingual Harry Potter

Harry Potter books come in a huge number of languages and designs besides the original English ones. We’ll explore these, as well as thinking about how J. K. Rowling plays with language to create spells, names and ideas in the original English texts. Can you understand the spells and perhaps invent your own? Can you work out the languages in some of the translations? Can you have a go at being a translator yourselves?

Suitable for ages 7+

12.45pm-1.30pm: Knight Sir Louis Character and Story Workshop

Author-illustrator team The Brothers McLeod will give a short reading, then you can have a go at making your own character, drawing Knight Sir Louis and making a six panel story!

Suitable for ages 7+

1.45pm-2.30pm: As Told By…You!

Come along and try out the most important role in any story: be a narrator for the day! This session gives you the chance to play around with someone else’s story and tell it in your own voice.

2.45pm-3.30pm: Creating Shape Poetry with Emilie Lauren Jones

In the Theatre Bar

11.30am-12pm & 2.30pm - 3pm: Henry the Thorth

This fun reimagining of Shakespeare’s Henry the Fourth blends the classic play with Thor! Think Shakespeare’s not for you? Think again!

In the Foyer

  • Visitors will have the opportunity to write acrostic poems based on their favourite book/book character. These will be as imaginative as possible, with support for writing using creative language and original style.

  • Chat to representatives from Coventry Libraries, do some crafts and sign up to get a library card!

  • Browse Kenilworth Books’ pop-up bookshop and get stuck in with some bookish crafts with local authors!

  • Warwick Research with Kids is a group of researchers interested in how children learn to talk and understand. We use a special machine called an eye-tracker to find out what infants and children can understand when they listen to stories (even before they can talk!). You can tell a lot about what someone is thinking just by looking at their eyes, and maybe you can even read their minds! Join us to find out and have a go at eye-tracking yourself.

    Ages 2+

  • You might use a back pen to write your own stories, or maybe at school. This science experiment will allow you to see what’s actually going on inside a black pen!

  • Whilst you’re wandering around the Arts Centre, you may come across some of your favourite fictional characters. Be sure to say hi!
