Science on the Hill - Out of Equilibrium: From Space to Biology

  • Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building Coventry, England, CV4 7AJ United Kingdom (map)

The universe, from the vastness of space to the intricacies of biology, thrives in a state of “out-of-equilibrium”. Cosmic phenomena, such as stars and galaxies, constantly evolve due to gravitational forces and energy exchanges. On Earth, thermal currents drive weather, sunlight fuels photosynthesis, and life resists stillness—cells metabolize, organisms adapt, ecosystems evolve—all powered by unyielding energy flows.

Come and learn about why “out-of-equilibrium” is the normal and how equilibrium means “dead-ended stagnation”.
