“A Bit OCD”

  • The Exchange 3 Centenary Square Birmingham, England, B1 2DR United Kingdom (map)

How we talk about youth mental health and neurodivergence

Phrases like ‘a bit OCD’ are prevalent in our society - does this come from a place of ignorance or just a reflection of how we’ve heard issues referred to in the media? Are mental health conditions over-simplified in the media or are they glamorized, particularly on social media?

This event will explore how the media represents young people and those with mental health conditions, and the impact this has on the public perception of how these conditions manifest in real life.

This event is part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science 2023 and was made possible thanks to funding from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), which is part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). It has been organised by the University of Birmingham.
